Chapter Fifteen

Lainey studied the terrain again. She edged closer to the trees and leaned over to look around them. She couldn’t go down and she had never found a way up and across this particular area. In a way it was good that no one could approach from above the village but it meant she couldn’t escape either. Not without some serious climbing gear which she didn’t have nor know how to use if she did have it. But she wasn’t giving up so easily. She was not a quitter. Not that she hadn’t considered it a time or ten over the last decade but ultimately she chose life and that meant getting off this mountain and away from the village of idiots.

She thought about what Monica had told her. Kelly hadn’t mentioned doing anything crazy but then again her friend wasn’t one to give up easily. They both knew, even if they didn’t actually admit it, that once Lainey was married the chances of Kelly being welcome in the village was slim. Kelly would probably get herself killed if she tried to continue to visit. Fear for her friend was the main reason she tried to convince Kelly to quit visiting. But fear had kept on in the village her entire life and if she wanted a better life she had to find a way. No one would be coming in with a goddess at their side and death at their back no matter what delusional visions Monica insisted she had.

Lainey shuddered. Some things couldn’t be explained lately. How did Monica know about the couple and the warehouse fire? Why did the phase about flames keep surfacing. Surely if Kelly could create flames with her hands she would have shown her best friend. She watched the goats jump from one ledge to the next and realized her plan of following the goats down wouldn’t work. That was okay, she would find another way. Maybe, she could wait until she had her wolf and escape that way. The only problem with that plan was the fact the others could chase her down. Even if all the females stuck together they were outnumbered.

She had been searching for days for a way down from the mountain. No, that wasn’t correct, she had searched her entire life and never found a way out. Why she thought being extra vigilant and trying harder would suddenly produce a path down was the definition of crazy. She had less than two moon phases to figure it out though and figure it out she would. Somehow.

The whistle caught her attention and with one last look around the area she headed back down the path to the hole in the mountain the new village chief had determined as her temporary prison. He only allowed the females to bring her one meal a day and the lack of food was taking a toll on her body.

Rounding the last bend in the path she saw Monica standing outside the small opening.
